Organization Introduction

On May 8th, 1967, representatives from Beaufort, Bertie, Hertford, Martin, Pitt and Washington Counties met in Greenville, NC to lay the foundation for a new type of organization which wouldassist local governments through the administration of federal and state programs. Each county passed resolutions of support and became members of the new organization, which became the Mid-East Commission.

Today, the Mid-East Commission is one of the 16 regional Councils of Government, or COGS, in North Carolina. COGS were introduced into the NC legislature in 1967 as “…a system of multi- county regional planning districts to cover the entire state” (G.S. 143-341). The Mid-East Commission serves Region Q, which spans Beaufort, Bertie, Hertford, Martin, and Pitt Counties. The Organization serves these five counties and its 40 municipalities in many ways under the main pillars of:
the Area Agency on Aging, the Administrative department, the Workforce Development department, and the Planning, Economic Development, and Community Services department.

Together, these pillars provide a multitude of programs for the communities, businesses, and citizens of the region, from aging and financial services to affordable  housing, career progression, infrastructure planning, and much more. The Mid-East Commission encompasses a mission of “people working together”. Its efforts celebrate the vision, hard work, and successes of not just one entity, but each county, each city, each town, and each person who
walks the path with Mid-East and brought it to where it is today. The COG acts as a vital additional source of support for Northeastern NC, an area that is fraught with
some of the most difficult challenges within the state.
